How the age calculation works
Your exact age is the amount of calendar time between your date of birth and the calculation date, broken into three parts: complete years, remaining complete months, and remaining days. The calculator handles all of it automatically — including leap years.
Leap-year handling
A leap year has 366 days and happens every 4 years, except in century years that are not divisible by 400 (so 2000 was a leap year, 1900 was not). Because February can have 28 or 29 days, birthday maths needs a little extra care:
- Born on February 29? Your birthday is treated as February 28 in non-leap years — the standard convention used by official records.
- Month-end borrows (for example, from March 31 back to February) use the real number of days in that month.
Why totals matter
Years, months and days are great for everyday use, but totals help with different questions: total days is exact and easy to compare, total weeks is useful for weekly routines, and total months is handy for billing or growth milestones. All three are computed from the same precise day count.
